The festive season and its stresses.

As the festive seasons rolls around, it can put an added pressure on us.

The pressures can come from many places and in many forms.

You might be holding gatherings at your house for the festive seasons.

It might ignite sadness around lost ones, friends or families that are estranged. When you have some downtime have a think on how you could make that sadness a little lighter.

Maybe you are in a different country to your family, think about how you can make that easier on yourself, maybe by contact, maybe by volunteering and becoming involved with local groups that help out those on their own around this festive time.

You might feel a need to impress others with festivities or gifts, which might, in turn, put a financial strain on you.

Over 15 years of working with people I find that these next coming months are the hardest months for many and many people end up seeking help. For some, it can signify the end of a hard year, or another year lost to something.

So why put the pressure on ourselves?

Preparation is always a great tool, be prepared early for your own expectations of yourself.

What is it you need to do now?

How you can plan and make whatever your task list consists of easier?

Is there anyone that could give you a hand?

Take financial stock of your own situation and set financial limits on yourself. It is very easy to get caught up in festive season madness at the malls. Make a list of what you are needing to buy, what it is that you can afford. No one wants to be paying the festive season of for months going into a new year.

If you are hosting festivities at your house, plan early, be realistic and ask for help if needed. There is no point being the frazzled host.

Forget what the Jones are doing for the festive season, that is their business, trying to keep up or impress others will usually end up costing you financially and emotionally.

Think of your values when making festive arrangements, what is it that would make your soul feel happy? What is it you need to do to make you feel that the festive season has enriched you?

So, start planning, be realistic and remember to enjoy the simple things in life.

Fostering

Over the years I have become a big advocate for fostering. I myself have worked with many children in care and those raising them.

There can be a huge amount of different reasons why a child ends up in care.

Holding a strong judgement on why children are in care, doesn't normally help the child.

These children struggle with identity and attachment.

Who am I if I am not with my family?

The healthy attachment process that happens when they are young is often interrupted or sometimes never happens, leaving these kids to become detached from themselves and the world they live in.

There are many ways to help kids in care without being a foster parent yourself.

In our journey, we have used friends and the community at large to help give children the opportunity to experience things they never have. You might have a farm or a unique lifestyle, you might have a collection of something, you might have a skill you could teach, you might be able to provide an aunty/uncle figure, a grandmother/grandfather figure, you might be good at sports, good at board games, there are many ways that you can help these children out without actually taking on the task of fostering them.

If you get the niggle in your heart when you hear about children who are fostered, think about what it is you could offer, often they just need time and someone to be interested in them.

What's your plans for today?

The sun is shining where I am today, and it definitely puts a spring in your step. For us here in NZ it is springtime, time of new growth. This can be a great metaphor for us as well, the winter months have passed and now the sun is out and it is time to get out and enjoy the weather and think about what we would like to be doing next.

So what is it you would love to be doing in the next few weeks or months?

What plan could you put in place today?

What is the one thing you could do today to move forward towards that plan?

What is stopping you?  how can you get around it?

Is there someone you know in your circle of friends or in the community that could give you some tips if so, contact them.

Today is the day to make the first step towards what you consciously want to have happening in the next few weeks and months.

I encourage you to start today, you may not have all the answers today, but as you go through the steps to achieving your goal, it will probably all become clearer how you will be able to carry on.

One thing to always check is if your goals are in line with your values system. Have a listen to the youtube clip below.

FAZED INN

I am lucky enough to be working in the community with some amazing people who are passionate about raising awareness and helping children, parents and families
that are affected by Fetal Alcohol Disorder Syndrome (FASD).

We are aware that their might be many children out there struggling with this disorder and some undiagnosed.

Our aim is to dispell the myth that a mother needs to drink excessively while pregnant for this disorder to happen.

A few drinks at a certain stage of pregnancy is enough is cause brain damage.

Our group is positive and  upbeat.

We brainstormed some tips for dealing with some behaviours that FASD will present.

These include;

one instruction at a time,
they will be impulsive,
at times lack judgement,
if you want an FASD child to feel calm, then make sure there is not too much stimulus,
they will often forget as their short-term memory is not great,
this can also make learning difficult,
behaviour might be right up there, but try and be calm and talk quietly,
let the small stuff go, as there will probably be bigger stuff to deal with it and
FASD children will often act first, and process later.

Comfort Zones

Often we become creatures of habit and tend to do the same things over and over. Some of us go on through life repeating patterns and cycles.

Sometimes we look at others and wonder how they can be so brave and try new things, sometimes we are the person being brave and trying new things.

There is lots of talk about comfort zones, some of us have bigger comfort zones than others. So what is a comfort zone?  It is that safe place we sit in where things remain the same and we feel       comfortable, we know everything around us, it is predictable and we mostly know what it coming.
So why bother moving out of your comfort zone?

The most learning you do will be out of your comfort zone. To do the same thing daily will probably mean you use the same strategies and patterns you have always used to do your day. Sometimes sitting in your comfort zone, maybe after having a hard time over something is a good thing while you get yourself back to your normal self. Sitting in your comfort zone for too long can get a bit boring.

We all know what if feels like to not want to go out for the day, and then when we have gone out, we have had such a cool day. We have all done it!!

Maybe you are tired, maybe your self-esteem is riding a bit low, maybe it is just not you to go out and do new things, maybe it has just become a pattern.

Going outside your comfort zone provides learning, just like we encourage children to try different things and expose them to different positive situations and events so they grow in their understanding and enjoyment in the world, we too as adults need to grow.

Any easy way to start if you are feeling a bit stuck, is to make a point of going outside your comfort zone once a day, it doesn't have to be parachuting but it might be having someone over for coffee or going for a walk, enrolling in a group activity that you enjoy, maybe going to visit someone who you haven't seen or a while. Maybe you might be someone who wants to step it up a bit more, enrol in some learning, finally get your license and visit a different place that you haven't been too
or maybe you would like to be a volunteer in a group you are passionate about.

Whatever it is, I encourage you to do one thing small outside of your comfort, our brains are geared to move forward, we learn until the day we die, going outside of our comfort zone puts us in different situations, who knows you might enjoy it.

FASD - Keeping your baby safe while pregnant

I am so passionate about pregnant mums knowing the risks of drinking while pregnant. I have spend a lot of time working with children who are affected by FASD. It is totally preventable, but it is totally devastating if the baby is affected by alcohol. The damage is to the brain and it is irreversible.
Help us to raise awareness

Inspiration

This was my facebook post the other day and I was rather chuffed.

Sometimes it doesn't take much to inspire someone, sometimes you are just on a slightly different level to them, something foreign to them might be normal to you. It takes nothing to share inspiration with others, and likewise, there are those around us who inspire ourselves. I definitely have a long list of people who inspire me. Everyone is on their own journey in life, but everyone wants to be moving forward towards better things, it is human nature.

So have a think, who could you inspire today?

FAZED INN - IS ONE DRINK TOO MUCH? ... FETAL ALCOHOL SYNDROME DISORDER

FAZED INN is a passionate group of people who will be starting a training program for those who suffer
from FASD (Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder).  This is a totally preventable disorder that cannot exist
unless a mother drinks while she is pregnant. The implications of drinking and the child carrying this
disorder are for life, it can not be fixed. The brain is damaged, it is irreversible.  Between this passionate
group, there are many years of experience working with these children trying to help them learn new
strategies and skills, things that happen naturally for other children. Please spread the word and follow
this incredible journey to help those who didn't have a choice.

NLP and Hypnotherapy helps PTSD

I love my work and how hypnotherapy and NLP help people to get over PTSD ( Post Traumatic Distress Disorder).

From a client...

I have PTSD. I hate the movement of cars and aeroplanes. I also have anxiety. Hypnosis has worked for me as it has given me the tools to calm myself down and relax in times of stress and when I'm feeling anxious and/or help myself feel safe and escape into another place when on an aeroplane. Since having the hypnosis I have found it a lot easier to control my mind and relax in times I'm feeling anxious, rather than my mind controlling me and freaking out.

Trauma and moving on

Trauma can happen to any of us at any time. Trauma is the result of an extremely distressing event happening to us or around us.

The same trauma can happen to different people and there can be very different responses.

Trauma can be one event, or it can be ongoing events.

As trauma is caused by a very distressing event, the memories coded from that event are fully represented through all our senses.  Some senses will remember that trauma more than others.

Trauma has a way of being triggered. you may feel that you have got over a traumatic event that has happened, but a certain sound, smell, something you see, something you feel, can trigger that traumatic event like it was just happening.

When events happen to us in life, there are usually learnings we take away, things we know we will do, or we won't do, sometimes we find a lesson in the learning, sometimes we have just been caught up in a terrible event.

If we learn to manage our traumatic experience, we can then use that to become a strength to help us against any future negative experience.

As with any negative experience, the strategies we learn from coping, the strength we draw from those experiences can be used as a positive force to motivate us forward in our day to day life.
